Why Get A Private French Tutor

Personalised Attention

In a group setting, the classes are often lecture-style lessons, and this one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t suit everyone as each student will have a unique learning style and learn at his or her own pace. With private tutoring, a tutor can give undivided attention to each student. First, an assessment will be done to determine the level of the student’s language skills.

After this, a customised lesson plan will be developed based on the student’s unique learning styles and needs. This allows the student the freedom to learn French at his or her own pace, with regular monitoring and feedback that will help accelerate the learning curve.

Learn At Your Own Pace

Not everyone learns at the same pace and in a group setting, a student might start to fall behind if he or she misses a lesson or two, making it difficult to keep up with the rest of the class. In addition, if a student starts to struggle, he or she might not be able to make the most out of future lessons as the rest of the class moves ahead.

With private tuition lessons, students are free to learn at their own pace and tutors can quickly go back to the basics if a student starts to struggle.

Learning Unique Cultural Insights

Learning a language isn’t only about speaking and writing, but it is also an excellent way to gain unique insights into a foreign culture, broadening our exposure and perspectives of the world. A tutor won’t just teach the language, but he or she can share their individual experiences with the culture, helping the student understand the fine nuances when it comes to art, history, and literature.

Learning French also will deepen the understanding of customs, traditions, and festivals that might seem different from our own, enriching cross-cultural interactions and fostering a greater appreciation for the diverse world in which we live.

Quickly Developing Speaking Skills and Confidence

One of the most difficult things about learning a new language is developing the confidence to speak and make mistakes, especially for more self-conscious students. In private tuition, the tutor can adapt lessons to fit the student’s unique strengths and weaknesses, allowing for more practice in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

Having a dedicated tutor means learners receive instant feedback on their speaking. Whether it’s correcting mispronunciations, refining sentence structure, or clarifying misunderstandings, this real-time feedback helps learners adjust quickly and avoid ingrained errors. As students engage in conversations and overcome hesitation, they become more comfortable and confident in their speaking abilities, ready to converse with native speakers.

Common Challenges When Learning French

Common Challenges When Learning French

The French grammar rules are notoriously difficult due to their complexity and numerous exceptions. Mastering verb conjugations changes not only based on tense but also depends on the subject pronoun. In addition, the French language also has masculine and feminine genders unfortunately, there are no clear-cut rules for determining the gender of a noun, so learners must memorize the gender of each noun individually.

French also employs different word orders, especially in questions and negations. These grammatical intricacies can be overwhelming for beginners, requiring consistent practice and focus to internalize the rules and exceptions.

The fear of making mistakes is a significant barrier to effective language learning, often limiting progress and preventing learners from fully engaging with the language. Many students hesitate to speak or write in their target language out of concern they’ll make errors, be misunderstood, or face judgment from others.

This fear stifles the crucial practice needed to improve, as language learning is inherently iterative and requires trial and error. When students are overly cautious, they can miss out on valuable opportunities to apply new vocabulary and refine their pronunciation.

Practice makes perfect, and learning languages is no different. However, in a fast-paced society like Singapore, making time for language practice might prove challenging, and students need to be disciplined enough to set aside some practice time frequently. If you’ve heard of the phrase “if you don’t use it, you lose it”, this applies very much to languages as well.

Even a brief week-long hiatus from language learning and practice could significantly set a student’s progress back.

The pronunciation of French words differs significantly from English, or any of our mother tongue languages. French has nasal vowels, such as "an" or "on," which can be challenging to master. Silent letters are another obstacle; many words contain letters that are not pronounced, especially at the end of words.

For example, in "petit," the "t" is silent. Additionally, some sounds, like the "r" sound, require specific tongue placement, which may be unfamiliar to learners. Overcoming these pronunciation challenges requires listening to native speakers, consistent repetition, and sometimes professional guidance would be helpful.
