Secondary School Mother Tongue

Secondary School Mother Tongue

Knowledge of a second language is a privilege, and thankfully, the Singapore school syllabus makes us all effectively bilingual. Whether students choose to learn Chinese, Malay, or Tamil, the Mother Tongue is a crucial subject that plays a vital role in teaching and preserving culture and a sense of community. In secondary school, the curriculum becomes more advanced and focuses on higher levels of language proficiency including comprehension, essay writing skills, literature, and cultural appreciation.

Some students might experience difficulties with the more complex language lessons, especially if they speak predominantly English with their family and friends. Our team of experienced language tutors can help bridge knowledge gaps and promote a better understanding of the language and culture!

Our Private JC Tutors

Our Private JC tutors are academically highly qualified. All hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree while many hold a postgraduate degree like a Master’s or a PhD in their chosen field. In addition, the majority are MOE or ex-MOE teachers, which means they know the syllabus extremely well and can guide students to excelling in their classes and acing their exams.

In addition, we also evaluate our family of tutors based on their teaching skills, adaptability, organization skills, passion for educating the young, and critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Of course, a stellar record with loads of testimonials and case studies showcasing the successes of their previous students are greatly prized!

Educational Philosophy and Approach

Our Educational Philosophy and Approach for JC Tutoring

We pride ourselves in providing all our students with an engaging and supportive environment for them to be their best.

JC can be a trying time for many students. From numerous subjects and advanced principles to understand and retain to vast amounts of homework and study time needed for each, it can get overwhelming for most people, let alone a young JC student. In addition, if a student falls behind in a certain subject, it can get discouraging and lead to anxiety and self-consciousness.

We’d like to help each student be the best that they can be. Not only do we strive to have our students perform well academically, but we also place great importance that they enjoy learning and their JC life. Our student-centric approach places the needs of the student first, helping them develop a genuine love for all the subjects that they are taking and fostering the curiosity and drive to succeed

Why Have Private JC Tuition

Personalised Attention

A JC class can be an overwhelming, busy place. The teacher will have to keep tabs on 20 to 30 students, and if a particular student needs attention, he or she might find it challenging getting it. Every student learns differently, and the school teacher cannot possibly cater to everyone’s unique learning style because of time constraints and tight deadlines.

That’s when JC tuition can help. One-on-one attention will suit students that have specific needs to want to focus on a few key topics. Private tuition can also help with weak points and seek to strengthen the foundation of the subject before moving on to more complex principles. Feedback and regular assessments can also keep the student on track and the tutor can identify any weaknesses and address them before a student has too many failures and gets disheartened.

Customised Lesson Plan

Students learn in different ways and at different speeds. A student that has a different learning style that deviates from the majority of students might find it challenging to keep up with the rest of the class. For example, a student that learns best by experiencing and doing might not get much benefit from a lecture-style lesson.

With a customised lesson plan that is possible with private tuition, the tutor can tailor the teaching experience to suit the unique style of each individual. In addition, if a student is lagging, the tutor can also dial it back a notch to focus on building a more solid foundation before moving on to more complex concepts.

Reduce Test and Exam Anxiety

Tests and exams can be a source of great stress to a JC student, let alone the ‘A’ Level examinations. Students that experience pre-exam anxiety not only perform at a sub-par level, but they also might have mental health consequences far into adulthood. Not good!

By routinely administering practice tests and exams, tutors will have students prepare for the real thing. Each mistake in a practice exam is thoroughly explained so that the student learns and moves forward. As mistakes and knowledge gaps are corrected, the student’s score typically shows significant improvement, which gives them greater self-confidence to tackle the more challenging tests. The more students feel comfortable taking practice exams, the better they will score and this, of course, will lead to a more favorable academic performance.

Applying Theoretical Principles to the Real World

Many JC subjects are advanced ones, and one of the things we hear frequently are students questioning whether they will use the knowledge as they move into adulthood and enter the workforce. Our tutors are trained to provide loads of examples of how their current knowledge of complex subjects like math and science can impact their professional and personal life in the not-too-distant future.

For example, construction and buildings can be used to illustrate the principles of geometry, or students can be shown how chemistry can help develop life-saving medications. Alternatively, tutors can work with students to do additional experiments during tuition lessons, further broadening their perspective and giving a unique insight to the theoretical application of the knowledge they learn in school and how it relates and helps with real life scenarios.

Common Challenges Faced By JC Students

Common Challenges Faced By JC Students

With a multitude of subjects at the JC level, each coming with its own share of homework, study time, and group work, JC life can be overwhelming. Proper time management is key, and students disciplined enough to allocate a set amount of time for each subject tend to be more organized in their academic life.

Parents and tutors can also help structure a JC student’s time by jointly developing a study schedule and ensuring that the child sticks to it. Don’t forget to leave loads of play and relaxation time as well!

Many JC subjects aren’t easy ones. When critical thinking and problem solving skills are severely tested, some students struggle to understand the complex principles that many subjects contain, especially if they do not have a rock-solid foundation.

Moving ahead with a subject is challenging without the proper foundation, and private tuition can help build that foundation, laying the groundwork for more difficult concepts in the near future.

Singapore’s academic landscape is a competitive one, with great emphasis placed on grades and performance. If a student scores below the average, he or she might develop an inferiority complex and be embarrassed to raise questions during school classes. Some students might also shy away from the spotlight, hesitant to try to solve problems in front of peers and classmates.

This is an unhealthy environment but it is also one that is extremely common. Fear of failure is already evident in most people, but failing in front of a classroom full of friends and classmates is infinitely worse.

In a school classroom, the teacher is supposed to teach the syllabus in a specific way in accordance with the MOE guidelines. However, this doesn’t accommodate the different learning styles of many students. While most students do well with a lecture-style classroom teaching, there are some which do better with other tools like visualization aids, interactive materials, hands-on learning, and experimentation.

These students that learn differently might struggle to keep up with the rest of the class. For example, a student that cannot effectively learn by listening might not do well in a class consisting mostly of a teacher reading.
