JC Math Tuition

Math is a fundamental subject that not only allows us to excel in our academic life but also in our personal and professional life well into adulthood and way ahead in the future. However, JC Math is a different ballgame, and as formulas and principles get more complex, students often struggle to understand the subject, particularly if they don’t have a strong foundation.

Fret not, at Private Tutor SG, our tutors are trained to go at YOUR pace. We understand that not all students learn at the same rate or with the same methodologies and will tailor our teaching methods to optimise each individual’s learning curve! Let’s work closely together so you or your child can ace those ‘A’ Levels!

Junior College Math

Junior College Math

Math is a tricky subject where students have to keep pace with the rest of the class or risk falling behind. If you lag, that makes school classes less effective, as students lacking a strong foundation will find more complex principles and equations challenging. Our JC Math program focuses on identifying any knowledge gaps in previous studies and filling them, building a rock-solid foundation on which more advanced topics can be taught and understood.

With dedicated, personalised attention and customised teaching methods, our tutors will address each student’s weaknesses, strengths, and learning styles. Breaking down challenging concepts into more manageable parts, they will ultimately aim for optimal results in the most high-stakes exams in JC: the ‘A’ Levels.

‘A’ Level Examination Preparation

‘A’ Level Examination Preparation

Students often face anxiety and stress when an exam or test is coming up, which isn’t great for performance. Not only will the fear of failure prevent them from truly excelling, but the impact on their mental health might last into adulthood.

As we all know, practice makes perfect. All our students are frequently exposed to practice tests and past year examination papers, and through extensive practice sessions, their mistakes are immediately identified, explained, and corrected until understood. This typically leads to a dramatic increase in grades, which in turn, leads to a greater sense of self-confidence and reduction of anxiety.

Our Private Math Tutors

At Private Tutor SG, our math tutors come from all walks of life. Highly qualified in one or more Math disciplines, they hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in one or more Math disciplines. The vast majority of them are also MOE and ex-MOE teachers, which means they know the Singapore school syllabus extremely well and what examination requirements typically are.

As JC Math is an advanced subject, it is likely that your private Math tutor will also have a post-graduate degree like a Master’s or PhD. However, we don’t select our tutors based purely on academic qualifications, but we also look at other skills such as teaching methodologies, track record, and personality traits like kindness and empathy.

Educational Philosophy and Approach

Our Educational Philosophy and Approach for Math Tutoring

We pride ourselves in providing all our students with an engaging and supportive environment for them to be their best.

At Private Tutor SG, we believe that with the right guidance, support, and resources, each and every student has the potential to excel in Mathematics. Our tutors are focused on explaining difficult concepts and having students understand them thoroughly instead of teaching purely by memorization. In addition to the syllabus, we also strive to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

A student’s success in Mathematics stretches beyond academic grades, but will also foster a deeper understanding of the subject, more self-confidence, and a genuine appreciation for the perfection and logic of Mathematics, attacking each challenge with vigor and determination.

Our student-centric approach begins with an honest assessment of each student’s needs, then tailor a unique program to give them the attention and support to thrive. With regular assessment and feedback, any knowledge gaps are explained and resolved before moving on to more complex topics.

Why Have Private Math Tuition

Customised Pace

A typical JC class has about 20 to 30 students, which is a lot for the school’s Math teacher to keep an eye on. Each student learns at a different pace so having a one-size-fits-all solution doesn’t quite cut it for some students.

For example, a student who misses a few Math lessons because of family matters or medical leave might struggle to keep up with the current lessons being taught because they lack the foundational knowledge that was missed. When a student starts to struggle in a subject, especially one like math, catching up can be extremely difficult, and in some cases, impossible.

This leads to the student not comprehending the current classes and hence, losing all interest and giving up on the subject. Private Math tuition can then come in to fill those gaps so that the student can successfully catch up.

Customised Teaching Methods

In addition, not all students learn the same way, and some might not learn much from regular school classes. That doesn’t mean that they are slower, but that simply can mean that a student learns differently. For example, some students might do best by practicing and memorising math formulas and principles, while others will do best by understanding the relevance and applying it to real-world examples.

Our tutors are trained to identify the unique learning style of each student, tailoring their teaching methodologies to suit each one and optimise their learning curve. For example, a student who needs visual representation might do well measuring actual buildings or structures to learn trigonometry, or calculating odds in a card game to learn statistics.

Flexible Class Schedules

Students can be busy young people. With school classes, ECAs, and CCAs, academic life can get overwhelming. Couple that with family, weekends, homework, and out-of-school activities, and it certainly can get a little chaotic to fit extra classes into it all!

That’s why our tutors offer flexible scheduling to all their students. Not only can they teach during weekends and public holidays (subject to availability of course), but we also offer group and online classes to suit the schedules and preferences of each student. While private tuition lessons will benefit the vast majority of students, some students learn best in a collaborative, supportive environment surrounded by their peers and will thrive in group classes.

Improved Academic Performance

While there are exceptions to every rule, statistics prove that in an overwhelming number of students who receive private tuition, grades are dramatically improved. You would be hard-pressed to find a student who scored lower in academic performance after receiving private lessons!

Of course, the attitude and learning capacity of each student also plays a role. However, we’ve found that once a student’s grades improve, he or she often develops a renewed interest in the subject and greater self-confidence when facing stressful times like tests and exams. Having interest is the first step to success and by nurturing that interest, we can help each student be the best that they can be in Math!

Common Challenges When Learning Math

Common Challenges When Learning Math

Like many other subjects, when you lag behind in Math, it is incredibly difficult to catch up. Without a proper understanding of the fundamentals, it is tough to keep page with the rest of the class or make the most of the lessons taught in school.

That’s where private tuition comes in. Our tutors will go back to basics, fill in any gaps in the student’s knowledge, and ensure thorough understanding so that they can keep up to speed with the school classes.

For better or worse, the Singapore school system can be pressurising and stressful. Students often feel undue pressure to perform during tests and exams, causing anxiety that not only affects grades but also can affect their mental health in the long run. Unfortunately, instances of students “freezing up” or “blanking out” during tests or exams are way too common.

Our extensive exam prep can help mitigate these problems. By constantly exposing students to practice tests and past year papers, students gain more self-confidence, especially when they see tangible results like improvements in grades. After all, practice makes perfect!

There are many subjects that can be learned by memorisation, but Math isn’t one of them. While memorising formulas and equations can be useful, most of the students that do well genuinely understand and appreciate the logic of Math. By understanding why and how each equation comes to be, applying them to mathematical problems and real-world examples are way easier.

In our JC tuition program, we strive to foster a student’s understanding of the subject instead of learning everything by rote and simply regurgitating it onto an exam paper.
